Description

Cultural Landscapes: Preservation Challenges in the 21st Century

October 12-14, 2012

Rutgers University

Marking the 40th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention and the 20thanniversary of its Declaration on Cultural Landscapes, Rutgers University will convene an international conference—Cultural Landscapes: Preservation Challenges in the 21st Century.

Constituting “combined works of nature and humankind [that] express a long and intimate relationship between peoples and their natural environment, ”[i]  cultural landscapes are defined by human relationships to place as much as by physical features. They embody diverse interactions between humans and their environment, seek to protect living traditional cultures, and preserve the traces of cultures that have disappeared.

Cultural Landscapes: Preservation Challenges in the 21st Century will bring together leading scholars and practitioners form around the world to examine five core themes around the concept, implementation, and management of cultural landscapes and historic urban landscapes. The conference will provide an interdisciplinary forum for forward-looking approaches to 21st century challenges, with the objective of mapping strategies for a ten-year plan of action within these areas. Participants will present papers that will be revised, edited, and combined with six significant case studies and commentaries for publication. Rutgers’s Graduate Program in Cultural Heritage and Preservation Studies (CHAPS) in the School of Arts and Sciences will sponsor the conference.

PROGRAM ORGANIZATION

Scheduled for October 12-14, 2012, the conference will last two and one-half days. It will consist of five moderated expert thematic panels, and seven individual case studies that will focus on particular sites or issues related to the topic. Each panel will have a key moderator, who will be responsible for moderating the discussion at the session, and for the final summation of results and recommendations in Sunday's session.

The conference will be held on the first floor of Voorhees Hall (Voorhees Hall is adjacent to the Zimmerli Art Museum).
