CHAPS Programs

A Master’s thesis of approximately 60 pages, an in depth analysis of an issue in the student’s area of focus, is required.
Students ideally spend two semesters working on the thesis, registering for 3 thesis research credits each semester (16:082:707.708).

After consultation with the advisor, students submit a thesis proposal for approval by the advisor and directors of CHAPS at the beginning of the second year of study. The thesis proposal includes: a statement of the problem to be researched and its significance; an outline; a preliminary bibliography; a statement indicating courses completed or work experience related to the topic.

Upon acceptance of the proposal by CHAPS, a second reader will be appointed in consultation with the student and advisor. The advisor and second reader will examine drafts of the thesis, suggest revisions, and generally advise the candidate. Upon completion and acceptance of the thesis by CHAPS, the advisor shall assign a final grade for the six research credits.
