2012 CHAPS Annual Conference
Cultural Landscapes: Preservation Challenges in the 21st Century
October 12-14, 2012
Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention and the 20th anniversary of the Declaration on Cultural Landscapes, this conference will bring together scholars and professionals from around the world to address the debates over the interrelationship between culture and nature, the challenges of preservation within historic urban landscapes, the development of an integrated approach to identifying and assessing cultural landscapes, and the challenges of developing conservation strategies that reflect the complexities of world cultures and sites and respect their multiple stakeholders.
The Program in Cultural Heritage and Preservation Studies (CHAPS) provides a unique opportunity in the region to study heritage preservation issues within local, national, and global contexts. Based in the Department of Art History, CHAPS offers both a Certificate in Historic Preservation, (15 credits), open to undergraduates and graduate students, and a Master of Cultural Heritage Preservation track (30 credits), open to students with a bachelors degree or its equivalent.
The program is interdisciplinary and attracts students from a variety of disciplines and diverse backgrounds. It is designed both for students who wish to study cultural heritage issues as an academic subject, and those who wish to apply those skills in a broad range of non-academic employment opportunities. It combines a rigorous academic program with opportunities for professional training through field work and professional internships. Faculty includes both scholars and practicing professionals in the field, and course offerings are drawn from a variety of departments within the university. In addition, CHAPS offers coursework and internship or field work opportunities abroad through CHAPS Abroad.
